The Hike by Drew Magary

The Hike is a fantasy / scifi / almost horror adventure tale that is funny, gripping, and very entertaining. At times it reminded me Stephan King's more fantastical books (think the later Dark Tower books but less horror) and adventure computer we played as kid (endless weightless inventory!). The main character, Ben, sets out for a walk before a meeting and ends up on The Path. From there, he meets unlikely companions, fights monsters, deals with inner demons, transformations, and something otherwordly guiding him along. There is also a brilliant and emotional twist at the end. Drew Magary (of Chopped and Deadspin fame) doesn't miss a beat. Every little detail matters, everything has a reason (again, like old Sierra video games). The book reads fast and I didn't want to put it down. And did I mention the twist?

Recommended.
